You know what would be really awesome?
If BMW took an i8 and ripped out the entire drivetrain. The batteries, electric motors, engine, transmission, everything out. Then put one of these in it to power the rear wheels:
Use the transmission and with paddle shifters and a foot clutch. Convert the output gear to a gear that can power a short drive shaft leading to a limited slip diff. Replace the car's steering with a manual rack and pinion to save weight, (it's mid engine, it doesn't need power steering). Replace the suspension with manually adjustable coilovers. Use regular carbon brakes (regenerative braking no longer needed, of course). Call it the M1000. Paint it to look like this M1 Procar:
Yes, this would be the perfect imaginary competitor to the VW XL Sport concept.

I am all kinds of okay with this

I know little about that engine, but im sold.

999cc 4 cylinder making 193 hp at 13,000 rpm. It's from this bike:

Call it 200hp for the S1000rr engine.
But, due to its extremely high rpm range, you can gear it lower. So, call it 2:1 gearing reduction, so that it's spinning at 13k rpm at the same point a "regular" car engine is at 6.5k rpm. As a result of this, you'll be putting about the same amount of power to the ground as you would an engine with almost double the power (not quite double due to extra drivetrain losses).
That would be a hoot to drive. Probably would never get made due to fuel economy and emissions standards though.

I want this

It wouldn't weigh hardly anything, so it'd pass emissions and fuel economy just fine. It won't get made because BMW hasn't got the balls to do it.

"you'll be putting about the same amount of power to the ground as you would an engine with almost double the power"
Torque, perhaps. Double the power, not so much.

Why not bolt two of them together for a 2 liter V8 with close to 400hp?

Because it doesn't work that way.

Obviously its not that simple but for the SR8, Radical took two Suzuki bike inline 4s and made a V8 out of them

Radical didn't do shit, that was Hartley

Didnt know that but now I have something to read up on! Regardless though, if they "wanted" to Im sure BMW could make it happen, which they would never.

Why not just gut the car and give it the M6 V10 motor with a little more McLovin' Magic and call it the ///M. Not M1, just ///M.
It looks so nice, just lacks the pizazz.

The V10 won't fit?
![]() 02/13/2015 at 20:47 |

Why not? It's not all that big, and they can take out all the hybrid drivetrain stuff for it. I'm sure they can figure something out, their engineers get paid enough.

if you give up on the rear seats the V10 would almost certainly fit.
